Fifth Week of Development!
Step into the arcade!
Marsescent: Dragon’s Lair is about Owen Stone, old detective on a case where 5 children have gone missing in an arcade. He has to navigate his way through the strange arcade with only one of the employees helping guide him through and giving out information. Eventually, his search leads him to the basement, where he must play through one of the VR games stashed away and defeat the creature that’s taken hold of it.
Welcome into our Fifth build release!
To give you some context, our studio was created for our college's Game Simulation class where we have ONE semester to create an entire game! This is our fifth week of working and we are still going strong! Let’s take a look into our week:
On the programming side…
The programmers had a very busy week! They, once again, changed the camera. Some of it good, some of it bad, so they’re still working on it. However, I personally think it’s one of the better iterations. They also are starting to polish up “Boogie Boogie Battle” (our version of DDR). It plays well, and it looks cute! They also implemented some more story, and introduced a new minigame as well! The game needs…. Some tlc…. But, it’s there to show the shape of the game, so the player can understand the game loop. Our platforming section is coming together, but our professors say that it’s lacking in some aspects.
On the art side…
The artists created a ton of UI, as well as backgrounds! They’re focusing on the overall feel of the game, and making sure all the art styles work together. They’ve been caught up in the fun whirlwind of 2D art, but, as our professors say, our degree is 3D, so there’s been a refocus on doing more modeling.
What’s next?
For the programmers, there’s going to be a major focus in finishing up those other minigames, as well as rethinking the level design for the platforming parts of our game. They will also continue their journey of figuring out the perfect way to set up the camera for the game.
For the artist, there will be a larger focus on creating 3D assets, as well as texturing them too. They will need to create more things to fill up the world, so it doesn’t look like a ghost arcade.
In Conclusion…
In my humble, biased, opinion, I think this build is a great one. I believe it shows off everything we want to happen, even if it’s not in its most polished state. Spring break is next week as well, and as much as it’d be nice to spend it goofing off, we’re going to continue to work hard on our game! There’s a lot to be done, and we’re gonna do it!
If you’ve read this far, why not follow us here, twitter, and instagram! We will post a devlog once a week describing the what happenings of the past couple days.
Thanks for tuning in, and here’s to more updates,
