Eighth Week of Development

Step into the arcade!

Marsescent: Dragon’s Lair is about Owen Stone, old detective on a case where 5 children have gone missing in an arcade. He has to navigate his way through the strange arcade with only one of the employees helping guide him through and giving out information. Eventually, his search leads him to the basement, where he must play through one of the VR games stashed away and defeat the creature that’s taken hold of it.

Welcome into our eighth build release!

To give you some context, our studio was created for our college's Game Simulation class where we have ONE semester to create an entire game! This is our eighth week of working and we are still going strong! Let’s take a look into our week:

On the programming side…

The programmers made a ton of progress this week! Mainly in the platformer level. They fixed up the levels to make them a bit more enjoyable to jump around in, and added in some real boss levels! There are also some animations added. There are a few issues with the enemies that need to be fixed up. For example, the pixie enemy keeps shooting even after death.

Voice acting was also implemented! Though, not every line is voiced, and there are a few mistakes in the lines themselves, but having them in is pretty cool! I think this caused a bit of havoc with the ui…

On the art side…

The artists were texturing and animating! There are still some bitty assets being made to fill up the world, but they’ve mainly been making sure the real world looks cohesive. The fantasy world still needs some work visually, and our professors are recommending sticking to “one” style, which I do agree with .

Exporting out the animations is taking a bit, so they need to really put some time into getting those out to be inputted into the game.

What’s next?

For the programmers, it’s still more tinkering with the platformer. There have been leaps and bounds made, but there are still improvements that could be made to make it even better to play. Although we have some animations made, they unfortunately didn’t make this build; which our professors expressed their concerns with, so there is going to be a priority on getting those in.

For the artists, there needs to be a ton of animations made. A lot more life would be added if there was even just idle animations in there. Also, things need to be retextured in the platformer part to have a more cohesive game. Everything looks “nice” just not right together.

In Conclusion…

This build was a good step, but not as far as we’d like. There are only a few weeks left, so we really need to put in more effort to get stuff made, and also implemented.

If you’ve read this far, why not follow us here, twitter, and instagram! We will post a devlog once a week describing the what happenings of the past couple days.

Thanks for tuning in, and here’s to more updates,
