Tenth Week of Development

Step into the arcade!

Marsescent: Dragon’s Lair is about Owen Stone, old detective on a case where 5 children have gone missing in an arcade. He has to navigate his way through the strange arcade with only one of the employees helping guide him through and giving out information. Eventually, his search leads him to the basement, where he must play through one of the VR games stashed away and defeat the creature that’s taken hold of it.

Welcome into our tenth build release!

To give you some context, our studio was created for our college's Game Simulation class where we have ONE semester to create an entire game! This is our tenth week of working and we are still going strong! Let’s take a look into our week:

On the programming side…

The programmers have been trying to solve a notorious issue of Chibi Owen not sticking to the moving platforms, meaning he would bounce around when moved up and down. However, they fixed it a little too well, so when he steps onto the platform, he cannot walk around. They’ve also been working on another minigame that will be implemented soon! Another version of the mimic boss was added, but the initial way it was implemented was not very liked with the playtesters.

On the art side…

The artists have been retexturing a lot of the real life world to better fit the idea of an “arcade”. They’ve also been just continuing to get those animations in! As well as trying to get ahold of the aesthetic of the platformer section. There’s also been a lot of little detail stuff being made. It’s important to get big stuff in, but the little stuff is what really brings life into the game.

What’s next?

I think one of the biggest things is our professors saying our game should be “done” by next tuesday. It’s really scary, but using this anxiety to compel us to try to finish strong is imperative to our success.

For the programmers, they’re going to finish that minigame that needs to be implemented, fix any bugs, and get a better handle on the second phase of the mimic boss.

For the artists, they must venture into a scary place… Unity…. Artists who have time can decorate the scene so the programers can focus on stuff thats a bit more important. They will also continue to texture, animate, and make any extra UI that’s left.

In Conclusion…

Treating this as our final week of adding in new stuff, we are at a point where we decide if our game will be great… or just fine… I believe we’ve put too much effort into our game to just settle with fine.

If you’ve read this far, why not follow us here, twitter, and instagram! We will post a devlog once a week describing the what happenings of the past couple days.

Thanks for tuning in, and here’s to more updates,
