Ninth Week of Development!

Step into the arcade!

Marsescent: Dragon’s Lair is about Owen Stone, old detective on a case where 5 children have gone missing in an arcade. He has to navigate his way through the strange arcade with only one of the employees helping guide him through and giving out information. Eventually, his search leads him to the basement, where he must play through one of the VR games stashed away and defeat the creature that’s taken hold of it.

Welcome into our ninth build release!

To give you some context, our studio was created for our college's Game Simulation class where we have ONE semester to create an entire game! This is our ninth week of working and we are still going strong! Let’s take a look into our week:

On the programming side…

The programmers have started the arduous process of getting lights in… They aren’t the best right now, but it’s the first try so…. Perseverance! They’re also working on adding the different phases of the bosses, as well as just making the boss feel like a boss fight. Mainly adding in boss UI such as health. More story was added in as well. Just about finished with the narrative!

On the art side…

The artists have been continuing to make all the leftover UI, as well as, behind the scenes, working on some very important cut scenes! There is still some modeling and sculpting being done as well. Animations are also being made and imported into Unity!

What’s next?

For the programmers, it’s to finish up all the minigames that add that extra fun, make sure the story is implemented right, and to make sure the platformer is an enjoyable experience!

For the artists, it’s going to be a lot of extra ui being made, animations, and honing the style of the game to make sure it all fits together!

Life Updates!

As the author of this devlog, I figured I could use this opportunity to check in! Last week, me and a couple of others in the class decided to meet up and watch Godzilla x Kong (which was great by the way).

We felt pretty good after the movie, discussing the movie as well as the class. As we all started to part ways, I saw an older man standing outside his car with his window broken. I asked him if he was alright, and he said he was but that he wasn’t the only one that was broken into… Then I look at my car… parked diagonal to his….

And it was broken into! This was the first time that’s ever happened to me, and was a little freaked out. Luckily, nothing was stolen, and I had a buddy there to keep me company.

The craziest thing is that I had class the very next day! What do you mean the world doesn’t end when any little inconvenient thing happens to me? The thing I’m trying to say is… Everyone’s gonna go through something during this class, and it’s going to be hard. However, we still need to keep going because the world doesn’t stop, and we need to finish our game. There’s no harm in taking a break, but there is harm in dropping all your responsibilities and shutting everyone out because something went wrong.

Another crazy thing that happened this week was the solar eclipse! We were lucky enough to be in Texas where we’d have a great view of this amazing event! We were also unlucky enough where almost all of the state was entirely covered by clouds! It was still fascinating to see how dark it got, though.

In Conclusion…

It may not seem like a ton was added to this build, but there’s a lot of behind the scenes going on that will hopefully continue to help pave the way to success.

If you’ve read this far, why not follow us here, twitter, and instagram! We will post a devlog once a week describing the what happenings of the past couple days.

Thanks for tuning in, and here’s to more updates,
